New Sharon Fire and Rescue is located in north central Mahaska county where U.S Highway 63, Iowa Highway 146, and County Highway G5T intersect. New Sharon is a city with approximately 1300 residents and has one station with nine pieces of apparatus; two pumpers, two tankers, three brush trucks, one rescue truck, and one ambulance. The department covers all or part of seven townships which encompasses 165 sq. miles of mostly rural agriculture land and three small unincorporated towns. Union Pacific Railroad transports many hazardous materials through the community. The department works with North Mahaska Schools to provide money and teaching materials for the grade school children during Fire Prevention Week, and give fire truck rides. Department members are certified at the Operations Level for Hazardous Material Response and have an in-house facility to train and maintain certification for Confined Space Emergency Entry. New Sharon operates a State Certified transport ambulance service staffed by members at EMT-B level, and we have a heavy rescue truck with on board generator, light tower, and extrication equipment. Community Pride Commitment and many hours of training contribute to maintaining this department. We consider this department an invaluable asset to the community that we serve and are proud to be a part of the reason for continued growth of are area. Annual Events .... One of the fun events that the department sponsors is a car show which is held every year during our Spring Festival. Cars, pickups, and motorcycles are displayed along main street. Cash prizes are given, trophies are awarded, and music is provided for everyone's enjoyment. This event is held on Saturday of the first full weekend in June. |
